Our clients hired us when they relocated from the South Shore to Newton to have an easier commute. Upon purchasing this beautiful antique home they realized the kitchen did not meet their needs and previous lifestyle.
The palette and design intent was based on the clients’ goals and ID8’s core aesthetic. The design was carefully curated to reflect the historic nature of the house (1870) while meeting the couples’s goals to be able to entertain and cook daily. We made several structural changes to open the kitchen up to the dining room and visually connect it to the foyer which was previously separated as most vintage homes are. The old kitchen also had limited natural light which we addressed by flanking windows on either side of the cooktop overlooking their backyard.
The materials and finishes reflect an old world charm through the use of Encaustic cement tiles, a combination of ogee edged polished black granite and solid surface. The upper cabinets have a wire mesh interior that contrast the contemporary shaker style cabinets. We eliminated the need for upper cabinets by providing highly efficient base cabinets and a well outfitted pantry that is discreetly hidden behind a door.
We enjoy the challenge of creating a fresh modern approach to vintage homes through conscious design decisions.
Sashya Thind Fernandes of ID8 Design Studio is an amazingly talented, fun, efficient, and exceptional professional designer and architect who delivered more than I could have dreamt of! She’s exceptional because she listens—she was able to hear exactly what I wanted. She’s talented because she does it all—from design concept, to permit set drawings, job site supervision, and every last detail of material selection—she is a fantastic resource for all your building and renovation needs. She’s efficient–for every question I had, she’d come back with material samples, web site resources and her own recommendations practically before I could hit “Send”–she must be working all the time! The process was fun because she was encouraging without dominating and we shared equally in the excitement of the project.
